What is Suboxone?
Suboxone is a medication containing buprenorphine and naloxone, which is used to help people addicted to opiates overcome their reliance upon those drugs. It’s used for treatment of addicts of many drugs, including heroin, hydrocodone, morphine, codeine and fentanyl. Called an opioid antagonist, Suboxone reduces the harrowing withdrawal symptoms of these drugs, making detoxification a less frightening, uncomfortable and intimidating process.
People suffering from addiction are often wary of starting a course of prescription medication, even if it is intended to stop addiction to their substance of abuse. They fear becoming addicted to anything provided to them and want to break the cycle that has overcome their lives. This keeps many people from wanting to use Suboxone.
Suboxone Addiction Is Possible
Even though it’s used to fight addiction, Suboxone does present its own addictive properties. Containing buprenorphine, a low-level opiate, the opioid antagonist can become a problem if abused.
The benefits of using the drug to end opioid addiction does make the risk of Suboxone addiction worth taking, in many instances. The key to success is to make sure that people starting on a course of Suboxone are closely monitored to prevent a transfer of the problem from opioids to Suboxone addiction.
When Suboxone is used in a controlled environment, the medication’s benefits vastly outweigh addiction risks and proper application of the opioid antagonist can turn a broken life around.
