The issue of addiction is of importance to me personally because I have to live with this chronic disease for the rest of my life. Addiction is a disease that affects millions of people and challenges many family members. In my opinion, there is no greater public health issue.
What we know.
More Americans die from drug overdoses than traffic crashes or gunshot wounds. And often, intoxication is involved with other traffic and firearm accidents. Many Americans and youth, along with myself, struggle with this disease which can be fatal. Every community is affected by addiction and alcoholism.
Historically, our society viewed addicts as people that lack discipline or morality. In the early 1980’s, science came to the idea that addiction is a disease, and alcoholism was classified as such in 1991. Scientists discovered that addiction alters the brain’s reward system by changing a person’s normal hierarchy of needs and wants. The brain tricks the mind with cravings to survive. This meant people with addictions were not horrible, they were sick, and the medical community became obligated to heal. Perception became less judgmental and more open-minded to accepting addicts and alcoholics as chronically ill. It now is being talked about openly, similar to the public acceptance of cancer, breast cancer, and AIDS, which are no longer secretive topics.
I am an addict, the adult child of an alcoholic and we are both in recovery. Genetic factors account for 40 to 60% of a person’s vulnerability to addiction. Substance abuse is a challenge for me, my family, my community and my generation. My victory over addiction and my devout belief in recovery is my inspiration for a good life, and a desired field of study.
