Leaving behind the security of rehab and coming back home is nothing less than a huge changeover. You immediately figure out that life didn’t stop just because you were in rehab and evidence of that can be seen in the mound of bills piled up on your kitchen table. That means it’s time to get back to work.
A Reintroduction to the Workforce
If you’re lucky enough to have a job lined up after finishing rehab, your transition back into the workforce will be much easier. For the rest of us, however, looking for (and landing) a job post-rehab can be difficult.
AION Recovery has five job searching tips particularly developed for individuals in recovery:
Tip # 1 Talk with a counselor about your job seeking plans
Stress and anxiety will possibly play a large function in your job quest. And some of those worries are related to the same problems that triggered your addiction in the first place. A counselor can instruct you how to work through these emotions in a favorable way and move forward.
Tip # 2 Be ready to sell your skills
Staying clean is important for all job hunters, but it’s vital for those of us in recovery. You want to make a good impact right out of the gate. Furthermore, you’ll want to take time to revamp your resume. If addiction caused you to be unemployed for long durations of time, you probably need to create a skills-based resume. The special format focuses on what you have to offer employers instead of a chronologically listing former work.
Tip # 3 Stay clear of jobs that might trigger your addiction
For example, if you are a recovering alcoholic, working in a bar would almost certainly result in a relapse. The seduction is just too much to deal with. Plus, the last thing you want to do is set yourself up for failure. If your effectiveness hinges on employment in a new industry, so be it.
Tip # 4 Learn well-balanced coping skills to combat anxiety
In treatment, you presumably discovered a lot of new coping skills… skills that will ultimately become critical tools for work-related stressors. If you’re not able to handle stress in a healthy way, the chance for relapse increases by leaps and bounds.
Tip # 5 Ignore the Negative Ned’s and Nancy’s
You’re expected to be on the receiving end of pessimism at some point, but by and large, peers typically offer help to those of us in recovery. In the end, the only thing you need to worry about is how you deal with the scenario. It is best to stay away from all of the negative influences in your life, don’t feel bad when you shed a relationship with an old friend because they can’t maintain a positive perspective.
