Art and Music Therapy
What are art and music therapy programs
Art and Music Therapy assist with neuroplasticity, or the actual healing of the brain, by creating different avenues to explore things that may not come up in normal “talk therapy”. Music allows us to access emotions in a way that no other medium can. Songs bypass our thought process and go right to our heart and spirit. Frequently, music is used as a way to help people identify difficult feelings, bypassing the clients’ defenses and bring about connections in them that wouldn’t otherwise occur. Art therapy accesses emotions in much the same way that music does. Often the act of creating a collage, a mask or a drawing of our stressors and dreams can bring about new levels of understanding that are unattainable through words alone. These discoveries create openings and new points of view that can accelerate the healing process

About Nonverbal Therapy Programs
What is done during Music Therapy?
- Music therapy is a versatile umbrella term used to describe the implementation of listening, writing and playing music within a therapeutic environment.
- Here at Aion Recovery, music therapy takes on two forms: African Drumming training, facilitated by an experienced therapist well‐versed in this art, and listening therapy, facilitated by trained staff members who see the cathartic value in expression through music.
- Listening therapy consists of the facilitator offering a topic, with clients then choosing a song to fit that topic. Some examples of topics have been depression, recovery, relationships, addiction and joy.
- After each client’s chosen song is played, group members are then asked to share any thoughts and/or feelings that are brought up by listening to the song. Group members are also asked to offer their own interpretations of the chosen songs.
What is done during art therapy?
During art therapy clients are given specific topics related to their recovery process. They use painting, drawing, coloring etc…to depict their thoughts and emotions. This allows clients to express themselves in alternative ways other than talking.
